Foreigners can generally buy properties such as apartments and condominiums in Hong Kong and rent them out without restriction. However, residents of some countries – including mainland China – cannot buy real estate in Hong Kong. Prices range considerably and a luxury flat in Hong Kong currently hold the record for the world’s most expensive. The flat is located in a complex called The Arch, in Hong Kong’s Kowloon area. At a total of 5, 497 square feet, the apartment has views of Victoria Harbour, a private swimming pool and a rooftop terrace. The 80th floor penthouse reportedly sold for $28.8 million or $41,000 per square foot.
Condos are popular across the city, although a number of areas have been enjoying a notable rise in interest from condominium developers over recent years. Among them is Repulse Bay; an area along the coastline on the south side of Hong Kong Island. It was initially a resort but quickly became an attractive residential area with a distinct Mediterranean-style setting. The area is renowned for the shopping available at Stanley Market, which remains one of Hong Kong’s main tourist locations.
Those who buy into Repulse Bay enjoy easy access to numerous pubs, restaurants and street-side caf?s which run along a shoreline dotted with some excellent beaches. Stanley offers a range of low-rise apartments which have proved particularly popular amongst families.
Another popular residential areas is Mid-Levels, which runs along the hillside from Conduit Road and Robinson Road to Stubbs Road. Most condominium projects in the Mid-Levels area are of the high-rise variety. Because of its proximity to the centre of town, Mid-Levels residents enjoy easy access to the centre of Hong Kong’s nightlife.
High-end condominium units in Hong Kong generally come with a minimum of two car park spaces. Always ask for the car park layout to ensure that you like the car parks location as much as you like its corresponding unit.
