Just what kind of luxury will you get for US$41,000?

It seems that almost every property developer is using the word ‘luxury’ as a selling point right now, but just how much luxury you can really get for the equivalent of US$41,000 is clearly debatable.
For that sum you can buy one of more than 480 units in a 37-storey project on the outskirts of Bangkok – the latest to appear using the ‘luxury’ buzzword in its marketing material. It’s fair to assume that privacy – something many people expect to go hand-in-hand with luxury – isn’t going to feature too highly alongside the obligatory 24-hour security, swimming pool and fitness rooms at this condominium project. The developer is also targeting expanding families, so you can probably expect a few screaming toddlers from time to time in this particular ‘luxury’ mix.
I cannot help wondering why ‘luxury’ is being used at all? Does that one single word add significant marketing value when the product is quite obviously a million miles from what many people would deem to be luxury? Is anyone seriously going to buy at this project expecting to get a luxurious lifestyle?
Perhaps we should go back to judging luxury property solely by the price tag? I think it’s fair to say that luxury – true luxury – costs significant sums, and for US$41,000 I don’t think you’ll get much of it.
