Most of Jeju's visitors hail from either elsewhere in Korea or East Asia. As well as the island's stunning natural heritage and noteworthy culture, many are drawn to the resort-style Jeju city and its public casino facilities and 37 golf courses. Although Jeju welcomes over 4 million visitors from mainland Korea, Japan, and China every year people from further afield are increasingly eyeing the island for both short and longer stays.
A number of major corporations have taken advantage of Jeju's friendly business environment and chosen the island as their international or regional base. It is home for key functions of Daum Communications Corp. - a leading Korean internet site, and sole owner of Lycos of America.
The main attraction for overseas investors however, is that since April 2002 Jeju has enjoyed the status of Free International City. Planners have sought to take advantage of the site's geographically important position in northest Asia and its proximity to Korea, China and Japan. Taxes are being stripped away and the legal system is being overhauled to cater for foreign investors. It appears to be working, too. Investment of more than US$35 billion in tourism business alone will have been secured by 2011. Money is being poured into infrastructure; the island's airport international airport passenger handling capacity is set to double its 2006 capability by 2001.
Jeju is also very much playing its green card. Jeju island is set to cut its annual net carbon dioxide emissions to 3,435,000 tons by 2012, a 10 percent decrease from 2005, the Jeju government officials recently revealed. Last year, the local government also revealed plans to raise wind power generation capacity to 500 megawatts (MW) by 2020, in order to replace 20 percent of conventionally generated electricity. It also had said it will replace 26 percent of existing fuel used in transportation to environmentally friendly fuel.
Condos in Jeju
Resort or villa-style accommodation options have traditionally been the most popular form of real estate with overseas investors settling on Jeju, but with both visitor numbers and demand accelerating, condominiums are becoming increasingly common. One major development to have hit the market recently is the Berjaya Jeju Resort. The massive resort-type residential complex will be developed over a 10 year period by Berjaya Land Ltd on a 74.37ha site in the Yerae area of Jeju. More on buying condos in Jeju.
